What are livestock guardian dogs?

There are many guardian dog breeds, all of which have been bred specifically to protect livestock from predation.

A livestock guardian dog (LGD) stays with the group of animals they are intended to protect. They are introduced to the livestock as a weaned puppy to bond and become a full-time member of the herd or flock. Although some training is required, LGDs will instinctively guard their livestock from potential predation.

As large, sturdy dogs, the presence of an LGD is usually enough to deter potential predators. Should the animal continue to approach, LGDs are vocal and utilise their deep, loud bark to scare them off.

Maremma Sheepdogs

This is the breed of dog we have chosen for the Highland Livestock Guardians trial project.

Maremma sheepdogs are an Italian breed of LGD, traditionally bred to protect flocks of sheep from wolves. Despite their name, they have been successfully used to protect a range of animals, including poultry and even penguins!

This typically large, robust breed has a thick, white coat and are renowned for their loyal, friendly temperament. Their good nature is one of the reasons Maremmas were carefully selected for the Highland Livestock Guardians trial.
